David Mc Fadyen

(Management Committee CEA 1999, 2001-5, Treasurer CEA 2006, CEA Chemical Educator 2017)

Associate Professor David Mc Fadyen has been a member of staff in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Melbourne since 1993. Over this period he has made an outstanding contribution to the teaching of secondary school chemistry. Before joining the university, David taught in primary schools and was a Senior Lecturer at the Melbourne College of Advanced Education. At the university, he held the key role of Director of First Year Studies for 10 years, from 1996 to 2005. David’s understanding of the needs of secondary students led him to initiate the university’s Chemistry Outreach Program. This program continues to thrive and allows students to visit the university for lectures and practical activities. Perhaps David’s most significant contribution to secondary school education was in the appointment of the first CEA Project Officer in 1998. The Project Officer has a pivotal role in the work of the CEA, helping to organise conferences, workshops and other projects, as well as acting as a Transition Teaching Fellow at the university. David recognised that the first year teaching program would benefit greatly from the input of a person who was well acquainted with the content of secondary school programs and the challenges students encountered in studying the content embodied in them.
Aside from his contributions to research and teaching at the tertiary level, David has also been a member of the CEA Committee, the CEA Treasurer and acted as a Specialist Vetter and Examination Panel member for the VCE Chemistry examination.
