Richard Morrison

(Management Committee CEA 2005-2009, CEA Chemical Educator 2011)

Associate Professor Richard Morrison was the driving force in the development of inexpensive spectroscopy equipment suitable for use in VCE Chemistry. In August and September 2007 Richard toured the State with this equipment, conducting 30 workshops in many different regional centres. Nearly 500 secondary school students benefited from these workshops, performing practical experiments with equipment that gave very accurate results. Richard also developed the Chemical Detectives website, which provides spectroscopic data for a wide range of different compounds.  Students can use this data to determine structures and develop their skills in interpreting spectra. Many students will remember Richard as the in-costume organiser of the Murder Mysteries workshops such as Picasso Fiasco at Monash University which challenged students to use their knowledge of chemistry to solve crimes.
